I’m against buying alcohol, so instead of buying a bottle of wine I buy a bottle of olive oil. It’s universal and gets used up, and we don’t always want to splurge on expensive olive oil. Alternatively, good whole-bean coffee. If you don’t want anything edible, then maybe a book, theatre tickets, an annual cinema pass. The best gift I ever got from work was a Wizz Air voucher. Or a reservation for restaurant week
