When paying with PayPal, does the required amount have to be there in advance?

If you pay with PayPal, does there have to be the required amount in there in advance, or can it be zero, and PayPal sends you to the bank’s site as you go, you pay exactly the amount needed, and that’s it?

When setting up the account, you need to link a card or bank account, and PayPal will take the needed amount from there if there isn’t enough in the balance.
