Mail carrier
Hello, I bought a game from Canada. I paid VAT and shipping costs upfront on eBay. To my surprise, when delivering the package, the mail carrier asked me to pay an additional 25 zlotys. Where does this charge come from? It is over 50% of the value of the package itself. Moreover, I did not receive any proof of payment or anything. Below are the charges made at the time of purchase.

It is a customs clearance fee. It used to be included in the price of the service.
The fee for customs clearance of private parcels by Poczta Polska can be around 250 PLN for the basic service, but it depends on the number of items in the declaration and the type of goods. Additional costs may include customs duty, VAT, and translations.
Customs clearance applies to shipments from countries outside the EU that contain goods subject to taxation or requiring special inspection.
Poczta Polska can carry out simplified clearance, but in the case of the so-called “negative dictionary” (e.g. perfumes, alcohol, supplements, watches, works of art), the recipient must commission a customs agency to handle the clearance
Customs clearance service by an agency cooperating with Poczta Polska: approx. 250 PLN for a declaration of up to 3 items
Additional fees:
Document translations
Customs duty (depending on the type of goods)
VAT (e.g. 23% in Poland)
Sanitary or veterinary fees (if required)
If the shipment contains:
Excise goods (alcohol, perfumes, cigarettes)
Dietary supplements
Watches, musical instruments, bicycles
Collectibles or works of art
Goods valued at over 1000 EUR
In such cases, Poczta Polska informs the recipient of the need to handle the clearance on their own

Before ordering a shipment from abroad, it is worth checking whether the goods are not on the “negative dictionary”.
If customs clearance is needed, it is worth contacting a customs agency that handles postal shipments (e.g. Polamer, Cargosad, J&J).
