Captain's Levy for the State when buying from the UK
Summary: The discussion seems to be related to a tax or fee for the captain when purchasing from the UK, though specific details are not provided due to missing content in the posts.
Hello, it’s hard to draw definitive conclusions from various articles on this topic, and reading hundreds of pages of laws gives me a headache and nausea. From what I understand:
1) I pay VAT to the British state when making the payment.
2) If the price of the items I’m buying is over 150 Euro AND those items were produced outside the UK, then I pay customs duty. And here are my questions:
a) Does that 150 euro include VAT and shipping costs?
b) How will the dear customs officer check whether those items were produced outside the UK? Will they open the package and look for the words "made in china"?
c) How much is this duty? 100%, or more?
3) In addition, I also pay some additional handling fee, or is that the same as the customs fee?
4) Finally, do I also pay VAT to the Polish state?
I’ll never repay you for the answer.

OP1 year agoThanks, I need to clarify one really last thing then.
There are two shipping options when buying from England:
1) Through the eBay Global Shipping Program, and then below the shipping costs there is a listed amount of import fees (usually something around 50% of the item price, making the purchase pointless), even if the item+VAT+shipping costs much less than 150E.
2) Another option, e.g. Royal Mail inter std. And here there are no listed import fees.
So I understand that buying things worth under 150E with eBay Global shipping makes no sense at all, since then I pay extra "import fees" that I wouldn't pay if I bought the same item, but with regular shipping?

·1 year agoYou pay VAT on the total of the price and shipping only once, and only to the PL treasury.
You pay customs duty on the total of shipping, price, and VAT in PL. On the Ministry of Finance website there are customs tariff tables. There is a fee for the customs agent for the trouble of clearing customs. Rates vary from chamber to
customs chamber and can amount to as much as 150 złotych.
customs duty above 150 euros is in the range of a few percent

OP1 year agoHi, thanks for the reply, I have one question for clarification. Is this fee for the customs officer for his hard work always paid, even when the duty is 0%? Do I understand it correctly that he looks at the paper on the package, calculates that the duty is 0%, and then charges a 500 PLN fee?
Thanks

·1 year agoThe fee is only when the package is opened and charges are assessed.
There is no fee just for opening it.
The fee is not for the customs officer, but for the customs agent, meaning the company that presents it to customs for clearance on your behalf.
